Anderson, Grice Garner Volleyball Weekly Awards

first_imgFRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas’ Samantha Anderson and New Orleans’ Kaitlyn Grice are the Southland Conference Volleyball Players of the Week honors, the league announced Monday. All weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank. Anderson helped lead Central Arkansas (13-4, 3-1 SLC) to a perfect three-game stretch at home this past week. With wins over Southeastern Louisiana (1-14, 0-4), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (3-14, 2-2) and Houston Baptist (8-10, 1-3) under their belt, the Sugar Bears will look to extend their league win streak as they hit the road for a Thursday match at Northwestern State (6-8, 2-2) and a Saturday contest against the Lions. Offensive Player of the Week: Samantha Anderson, Central Arkansas – Sr. – Right Side – Tyler, TexasThe reigning Southland Player of the Year hit at least .321 in all three matches this past week, tallying six kills on just eight swings before resting the final set in Tuesday’s sweep of Southeastern before adding 16 kills on 28 attempts against the Islanders on Thursday. The senior right-side hitter closed out the three-match week with nine kills on 28 attacks as the Sugar Bears secured their seventh sweep of the year. Defensive Player of the Week: Kaitlyn Grice, New Orleans – Sr. – Middle Blocker – Valrico, Fla.Totaling 18 blocks this week (one solo and 17 assisted, Grice pushed her conference leading total to 92. She also added 31 kills during the three-match win streak that saw the senior middle blocker average 1.38 blocks per set. The Valrico, Fla., helped limit opponents to a .169 hitting clip on the week.center_img Grice played a huge factor in New Orleans (10-9, 4-1) recording their best start to league action since 2009. The Privateers took down Nicholls (3-15, 1-4 SLC) and NSU in five sets this past week before handling Southeastern in straight sets Saturday. UNO plays on the road this week, facing McNeese on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT and Lamar on Saturday at 1 p.m. Honorable Mention: Ann Hollas, Stephen F.
