first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington Minutemen held its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony on Friday, June 14, 2019 at 6:30pm (Flag Day) at Minutemen Headquarters, behind the Harnden Tavern. The simple ceremony consisted of the Minutemen and American Legion properly disposing of American flags it had collected over the past year. The flags were folded and placed, one-by-one, into a fire pit.  Each flag was saluted.  The public, as well as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and public officials, were invited to attend. The ceremony was the brainchild of former Minuteman Frank Curly.  After 9/11, Curly noted a lot of American flags flying around Wilmington, but – over time – many became worn and tattered.  The Minuteman has been running an Annual Flag Retirement Ceremony since 2002.Residents can drop off the flags, year-round, in the marked boxes at the Wilmington Town Hall and the Wilmington Post Office.Watch video of the event, courtesy of Wilmington Community Television, filmed by resident Niki Wilson:———Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook.
