Umphrey’s McGee certainly have a reputation for their covers, so much so that they decided to fuse covers together and turn it into a full mash-up album. However, they will also take things to Weird Al levels by writing the occasional holiday-themed parody. Titled “L.A. Santa,” the newest song in the UM catalog is a cheerful reworking of The Doors’ classic, “L.A. Woman.”The song was debuted at the recent holiday show from UM guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger, and was written by Cinninger literally the night before the show. “The prep time between Holidaze was tight this year so I wasn’t sure what I was going to do until the night before,” said Cinninger in a statement. “I opened iTunes and started scrolling for something very familiar while asking myself if it would translate to a Christmas atmosphere. I tried to use the same signature linguistics as Morrison, stressing his consonants and vowels but substituting holiday phrases. To be honest, once I got started it essentially wrote itself.”You can find the new single from Umphrey’s McGee here, or watch it in the video below. And here are the lyrics written by Cinninger, as provided by the band.
